Recently, the Respiratory Department of Chengdu BOE Hospital successfully used CT guided argon helium knife cryoablation technology for lung cancer, completing the hospital’s first clinical treatment. This minimally invasive technique not only provides a new option for local treatment of lung cancer, but also marks a big step forward for the hospital in minimally invasive treatment of lung tumors.

Provide opportunities for radical surgery for tumors
This patient is an 85 year old female who was diagnosed with a mass in the left upper lobe through chest CT examination, which is highly likely to be lung cancer. Meanwhile, she also suffers from severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and is unable to undergo traditional surgical procedures.

How are tumors frozen to death?
Argon helium knife cryotherapy is a new minimally invasive treatment method for tumors, belonging to physical therapy. Under the guidance of CT, argon helium knife can accurately locate tumors and use ultra-low temperature technology to freeze tumor cells to death.

After the patient was admitted, after multidisciplinary joint discussion (MDT), it was determined that surgery could not be performed due to severe lung function damage. It is recommended to perform CT guided argon helium knife cryoablation and lung biopsy. After thorough communication, Dr. Tao Guanyu and Dr. Wang Xiaoming, under CT guidance, used an argon helium knife to accurately locate the tumor, injected argon gas to generate ultra-low temperatures ranging from -130 ℃ to -150 ℃, and quickly froze the tumor tissue. Subsequently, helium gas was injected to raise the temperature to 10 ℃ to 40 ℃. After multiple cycles of "freezing thawing", the tumor cells eventually died due to ischemia and hypoxia.

Surgical situation

After the surgery, the patient’s vital signs remained stable and their mental state was good. The family members were very satisfied with the results. Postoperative pathological examination confirmed stage IIIA lung adenocarcinoma, and the hospital will develop personalized follow-up treatment plans based on the patient’s specific condition.
